Do I really need a separate morning and evening moisturiser?

A question that has been asked countless times, do you need a separate morning and evening moisturiser?

With many beauty gurus saying yes and others saying no, is it any wonder why there is so much confusion?

So we want to put the record straight.

First, let’s look at what a moisturiser is – A moisturiser is a cream that you apply as your final step in your skincare routine. There are hundreds of moisturisers on the market targeting different skin concerns, from acne, dryness, anti-ageing to sensitivity. The ultimate aim of a facial moisturiser is to replenish the skin and prevent it from becoming too dry or too oily.

They can either help protect your skin from daily irritants or work towards replenishing and repairing it at night.

So in answer to the question – Yes you really do need two separate moisturisers.

What does your skin need in the morning

In the morning your skin needs a light form of moisturisation but one that is also ready to protect your skin from nasty free radical damage, sunlight and pollutants, from the day ahead.

A lighter moisturiser will also be able to sink into your skin quicker allowing the smoother and better application of makeup, creating a great base for your makeup to lay upon for the rest of the day.

In the morning (and throughout the day) your skin needs to be protected from the harmful rays of the Sun. Therefore your daytime moisturiser needs to have an SPF included to provide a very basic level of protection.

However, often enough they don’t contain the right SPF amount (usually between factor 8 – 20), and therefore we’d strongly suggest also applying extra SPF with a minimum factor of 25, over the top of your moisturiser before you apply your makeup.

Your skin during the day is also working hard to protect it and your body from the days dirt and grime that it comes into contact with.

From air pollution, harmful UVA/UVB rays, makeup and dirt from our fingers and phones when they touch our face, our skin is a tough organ and one that really does need looking after.

Your face needs to be fighting fit in order to take on these daily stresses, and with the help of your skincare routine and moisturiser, your face will be able to do so.

Everybody’s skin is different and requires something different for it to be able to work well. Moisturisers with synthetic fragrance and harmful ingredients can be irritating to the skin, especially for those that have sensitive or acne-prone skin.

What your skin needs overnight

At night is when your skin is able to not only breathe but while you sleep it switches into repair mode, meaning it’s busy working to repair and replenish itself after the days’ dirt and grime has been cleansed away.

It’s during the night when the regeneration process is at its fastest – three times faster than it is during the day – No wonder it’s called ‘beauty sleep’!

Therefore a thicker moisturiser with all the right ingredients you need to target any concerns you have; spots, fine lines, sensitivity or oiliness, will be able to deeply penetrate and nourish your skin. Your skin is more permeable during the night so it’s the best time to apply your topical treatments too, so it can absorb all of the goodness.

How a day cream works differently to a night cream

Your day cream should be lighter to that of your evening moisturiser and should be hydrating too. When you first wake, your skin is at its driest, because of all the overnight work it has had to do to restore it.

Therefore a quick burst of hydration, moisturisation with natural goodness and an SPF, will help shield your skin from the daily aggressors ahead.

Your night cream will be the one that is going to help replenish your skin and help in the repair process. It doesn’t need an SPF and should be a thicker texture to your day cream. It will also probably have more ingredients in it as it has a lot of work to do to get it back to where it should be.
